UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller That Blends Survival Horror with Among Us Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several fascinating future games, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"This is a unique experience where a young woman containing several personalities within her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Within her reside four separate souls, all possessing unique fears and motivations. These entities can seize control at will, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the action unfolds within a creepy hospital, while additional clips show the main character navigating a desolate church.
A World of Individual Dread
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that idea — fears that are unique to every individual."
The core mechanic involves controlling whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these identities will change against your will during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's anxieties become amplified and assault the protagonist in succession. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by orderlies who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the waiting room have enormous blooms growing from their necks are. Flowers are a recurring theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "Each of the souls asserts that the body is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players have deduced a soul is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, since each soul can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The final entity standing could be a fraud. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is available to follow on platforms.
