The Young Spinner Makes Surprise Selection in England's Test Series Team
England have chosen a twelve-player selection just two days ahead of the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir earning a surprise spot.
Bashir's selection indicates that the tourists will delay until the day of the first Test to decide whether the venue pitch suit four seamers or the inclusion of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are included in the 12-man squad, showing there are no concerns about their fast bowler's fitness.
The other seamers complete the attack, with the latter most likely to miss out if the spinner makes the final team.
Ground Conditions Lean Toward Seamers
Brendon McCullum had been anticipated to choose an pace-only lineup on a ground that has hosted several past matches.
In those games, 134 wickets have been taken by seamers, with only 40 to spin.
Of those 40 wickets, the veteran spinner has taken the bulk, while all visiting spinners together have only eight.
At a venue known for its speed and carry, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, stated that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a side loaded with fast bowlers is still the more likely choice.
Spin Options Weighed
Previously there was speculation that the all-rounder could be brought into the team to provide some spin while also bolstering the batting lineup.
However McCullum has chosen to keep faith with the young spinner, having said earlier this year that he would be his preferred spinner for the Ashes.
Earlier, Lyon described the English spinner as “OK,” saying that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still the English best spinner.”
“This is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for people who haven’t done it in the previous in these conditions,” Lyon remarked of slow bowling in matches Down Under.
“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so opponents come out and excel out here.”
