The Details Known Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 lives lost their lives and over 40 sustained injuries when assailants fired on a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have called a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, officials have announced the death toll stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were transported to the hospital.

The deceased are still awaiting publicly named, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.

She told the moments before the shooting, explaining they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, a senior official said that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, many are still receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
