Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Considering a 2028 Presidential Run
Gavin Newsom, a leading Democratic figure, has revealed that he will determine whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections are over.
"Yeah, it would be dishonest otherwise," the governor remarked when asked about giving serious thought to a White House bid after the 2026 midterms. "I'd just be lying. And I won't do that."
The governor's current term as California's leader wraps up in January 2027, and term limits prevent another run. Yet, he cautioned that any determination is still years away.
"Fate will determine that," he remarked.
Increased Visibility as a Administration Opponent
He has emerged as a notable opponent of the former president's team, employing his social media accounts and advocating for a proposition that would increase the party's representation in Congress in response to GOP gerrymandering. This action has made him a target from critics.
Clash on Transportation
The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor is indifferent about the state's residents in a Sunday interview on a major news network. Duffy announced intentions to pull taxpayer dollars from the state and threatened eliminating the power to provide CDLs.
"I'm about to pull a significant sum from the state," Duffy said, following a recent fatal crash in the state involving an undocumented trucker that resulted in fatalities and four injuries.
Newsom's office pointed out that the national authorities had renewed the worker's status repeatedly, which permitted him to receive a trucking license under federal law.
The transportation secretary had earlier indicated he was blocking $40 million from the state for ignoring linguistic standards for CDL holders.
Strong Response from the Team
"One-time television figure, now cabinet member, continues to misunderstand federal law," the governor's team retorted in a previous release addressing the secretary's comments. "In the meantime, in contrast to this person, we focus on reality: California truck drivers had a fatal crash rate nearly 40% lower than the countrywide rate. The state of Texas – the sole state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Statistics are clear. The federal leadership misleads."
Voter Sentiment and Future Prospects
A recent study showed that a majority of the party and a significant portion of the electorate believed that Newsom should run for the White House in 2028. Since Trump took office, public support for the governor has risen to an typical level of a third from approximately 30%, while his unfavorability has fallen from an mean of over 40% to current figures.
Earlier this year, Newsom stated while traveling several swing states that he had "uncertainty" about his intentions for the next presidential election.
He noted his earlier challenges, including being found to have a learning disability at the early childhood.
"The thought that a individual who scored 960 on the SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was often seated at the back – the fact that this is even suggested is, in and of itself, remarkable," he commented. "Who the hell knows? I await who presents themselves in 2028 and who answers the call. And that's the question for the voters."
