Eric Adams Will Support Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election

New York City Mayor Mayor Adams declared his decision to back Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, despite months of strained relations between the pair of Democrats.

A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism

Only weeks ago, the mayor had lashed out at the former governor, calling him a “deceptive figure and a untruthful person” and alleging of having “a history of marginalizing Black political contenders.” However, in a recent statement, Adams made a U-turn, revealing he now plans to appear with Cuomo in communities where he maintains significant backing.

“It's essential to really wake up the communities of color that have suffered from gentrification on how vital this race is,” the mayor commented.

The mayor further explained, “They have watched their housing costs rise due to neighborhood changes and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those communities and speak one on one with community leaders and groups and I will appear with the former governor in those areas and get them engaged.”

Election Landscape and Current Developments

The election battle has so far been dominated by the contest between the former governor and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose rise in the polls has drawn interest globally and symbolized hopes for a revitalized leftwing of the Democratic party.

In a latest candidate forum, both Mamdani and GOP candidate his conservative opponent announced they would refuse the mayor's support if offered.

Months ago, the mayor had begun his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after being indicted on federal corruption charges which were later thrown out in exchange for his assistance with government enforcement actions across the city.

At an unrelated press conference on the same day, the mayor answered journalists asking about the endorsement plan by saying, “I’ll be with Andrew this evening.”

The announcement came a day after the two politicians were seen attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ first game at the famous arena, which took place immediately following a contentious mayoral debate.
