“It was unfortunate. That was essentially an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the gesture was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I just put up the incorrect digit,” he remarked. “It was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the first time an NFL owner has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Previous examples involve:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
